Saginaw 68/86 Steering Gears

Saginaw Steering Gear
Saginaw Steering Gear

The Saginaw 68 and 86 are by far the best-selling power steering gearboxes, most likely due to the sheer volume of vehicles they were installed in and the percentage of those that are still on the road. As implied by their titles, the 68 and 86 are two distinct gearboxes, yet they are completely interchangeable in practice. One is equipped with four mounting bolts, while the other is equipped with three. Surprisingly, the 3-hole box is the stronger. If your vehicle was originally equipped with a four-hole gearbox, this three-hole model will bolt in identically to the OEM.

82-00305 R- This is an OEM Saginaw casting that has been completely refurbished in the United States. All remanufactured steering gearboxes and racks undergo a complete cleaning and inspection, receive brand new bearings and seals, have the port threads for the power steering lines pursued to ensure a reliable seal, and have any potentially broken gears re-machined or replaced. This transmission will fit and work identically to the OEM, with a steering ratio of between 3 and 3-1/4 revolutions lock-to-lock.

82-00305 AN- A brand-new stock replacement gearbox that is engineered to fit and perform identically to the OEM Saginaw, including the steering ratio. This saves you time and money by eliminating the need for a core deposit or return, while also providing you with the peace of mind that comes with brand new steering components!

82-00305 HPR – Another OEM casting that has been completely refurbished in the United States of America. This gearbox will fit identically to the OEM, but we will give it tighter gear clearances and a rotary valve for stiffer steering feel during the remanufacturing process. This is ideal for off-road applications, as it provides improved control at low speeds, but it will also benefit “pro-touring” muscle cars that compete in SCCA CAM classes.

82-00305 QR – This is another rebuilt OEM box, but this one has a faster steering ratio of 2.75 turns lock-to-lock, compared to the factory gearbox’s 3.25 turns. This results in a more immediate steering reaction and improved handling. While this gearbox will fit a wide variety of vehicles, individual steering linkage components such as rag joints, pitman arms, and tie rods will almost certainly be vehicle specific.
